About Interserve

It all comes down to this for us:

Lives and communities transformed through encounter with Jesus Christ.

Fuelled By Purpose

Our purpose is to make Jesus Christ known:

Salt and Light

Interserve is all about making Christ known in countries where He is least known. We partner with skilled, passionate Christians willing to serve across cultures to impact individuals, churches and communities with wholistic care.  We get to be real salt – stopping the rot through practical compassion - and light – bringing illumination as we share the life of Christ that is within us.

Interserve – a community of disciples

Interserve is a community of disciples seeking to live for Jesus here in Australia and throughout Asia and the Arab World. When people join Interserve they become part of an international team of over 800 people who are committed to sharing their faith and discipling others.

We have a history of working amongst peoples of Asia and the Arab World. Our vision is to engage with these communities both here in Australia and throughout Asia and the Arab World.  The Interserve community facilitates the processes and care required for Christians to live and work in these contexts.  Interserve is a global community of disciples who are passionate about their shared vision and ruthlessly committed to serving one another.

We bring transformation to lives and communities through proclaiming and living the gospel, through meeting spiritual and temporal needs, through bringing our knowledge of the risen Christ with our practical skills. Many of these countries are amongst the poorest in the world, giving us wonderful opportunities to share our wealth and education as well as our Saviour and Lord.

Radical Beginnings (Our History)

Interserve began in England in 1852 as part of a radical new movement of global Christians.  A group of teachers and some of the first medically trained Christian women showed great love and compassion to the women and children of India's Zenanas.   This was revolutionary for the time and amazing breakthroughs followed.  The first women's hospitals in India were founded; orphanages and schools were started, including the first blind school; the Bible was taught and the good news of Christ shared.

In 1957 the organisation became the Bible and Medical Missionary Fellowship (BMMF). The name Interserve was finally adopted in 1987, reflecting our charter to serve people internationally through a broad range of skills.

Interserve continues to grow around the world.  We work in more than 25 countries from 19 different nationalities. Where practical, seconded agencies work in partnership with us to ensure the work of our Partners reach those who need it the most and that the best care is being offered to our Partners in their host countries.  We currently have a team of 730 Christians around the world filling job positions that are in great demand, such as teachers, medical specialists, development workers, Bible teachers.

Dedicated to Sustainable Ministry

We serve alongside local believers who can sustain ministries after we are gone. Where we engage in community development, we see our role equally as guests and partners and have a commitment to sustainable development practices.  This means a long term commitment to deeply engage in people’s lives, language and culture to bring about a lasting difference.

We also take seriously our responsibility to provide best-practice member care for our Partners to make it possible for them to serve in a sustainable way long term. Interserve Partners develop their own Personal Ministry Plan with mentoring and accountability provided on the field. We are committed to life-long learning and facilitate ongoing leadership and ministry development for all of our Partners.
