The Needs

Central Asia

Population: Around 90 million people

Major religions: Sunni Islam, Atheism, Russian Orthodox, Folk religions

Central Asia comprises a number of fascinating countries along the ancient Silk Road in the middle of the Eurasian landmass. This beautiful region features snow-capped mountains and productive agricultural regions alongside arid desert regions.  This geographical diversity is reflected in a similar cultural diversity amongst its friendly peoples. The cultural landscape reflects an amalgam of traditions shaped by Islamic beliefs as well as the heritage of being part of the former Soviet Union. Most countries here have been independent for less than 20 years, and are open to international assistance. The needs are great, both spiritually and physically, and there are many opportunities to serve.
